Each Uisge Asleep

watercolour (dangerous creatures from folklore series)

The Each Uisge is too pretty for your own good...

Finally another painting in the dangerous creatures series!

Another painting of the Each Uisge (pronounciation seems to be very debated unless you speak Gaelic, but something like 'ech ooskey' or 'ech ooshkya'), the most dangerous of all the water horses. He could take the form of a handsome man or horse, the better to tempt potential victims into the loch, where he would eat everything except the liver! The original pic can be found here: Each Uisge

In one folk tale about the Each Uisge, he tried to seduce a beautiful girl by the lake shore. He asked her to comb out his wet, tangled hair, so she (being a little smitten!) agreed. He fell asleep with his head in her lap and as she combed his hair she noticed water weeds growing all through it. Quickly and quietly, she untied her apron strings, slowly wriggled out leaving his head on her apron, and ran as fast for her life! Although he changed into his horse shape to chase her she survived, some say thanks to a charm she carried, others say thanks to a seelie water bull in her father's herd.

Credit to the books of Cecilia Dart-Thornton, which first introduced me to many of the characters out of my 'dangerous creatures' series, and to STelari whose recent painting of a Nokken (incidentally a very similar character to the Each Uisge from all accounts!) reminded me that there are other perspectives besides straight on!

He was originally supposed to be upside down, but I think it works better right way up...
